Spider-Man: Far From Home set to web up $150-180 million across 6-day frame

In a few weeks, the unwavering love for Spider-Man will mix with the Avengers bump, and the resulting concoction will propel Sony’s SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME to incredible box office heights. The latest outing with everyone’s favorite wall-crawler is expected to dominate this year’s Fourth of July weekend, and as of today, the current projections have on track to web up a serious amount of dough ranging anywhere between $150-180 million through the 6-day frame.

Originally set for Friday, July 5, Sony changed the release date so the movie would open on Wednesday, July 3 some weeks back, a move that will give it an extra bump going into the holiday weekend. According to the early tracking three weeks out, Sony is remaining on the conservative end and estimating a $154 million from Tuesday-Sunday (via Variety). On the more optimistic end, Deadline is hearing that the early tracking demos are akin to Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, which opened to $179 million back in May 2016. Should that hold water, Spidey should have no problem leaping his way to about $170 million across the week. 

Impressive as those numbers are, should Spider-Man hit the higher end of expectations it still might not set any record, as this Tuesday-Sunday frame has been very lucrative for studios releasing their big tentpole projects. The current record is still held by 2004’s SPIDER-MAN 2 at $180 million, with other movies like TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE and TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON making $176 million and $175 million respectively. That all being said, Marvel movies have a habit of blasting past expectations, with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR/ENDGAME, BLACK PANTHER and CAPTAIN MARVEL all soaring beyond the even projections set days before release.

The last movie, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, came hot off the character's reboot in CIVIL WAR and proved people still love the friendly neighborhood hero by amassing $117 million in three days back in July 2017. Right now, the folks at Box Office Pro are estimating its regular three-day run should slightly top that at $120 million, but then factor in Tuesday night early showings and full showtimes on Wednesday and Thursday (the latter being July 4th), and the movie should have no trouble making that $30-40 million going into the weekend. 

Anticipation is high for FAR FROM HOME, with trailers focusing on the death of Tony Stark and how it has impacted Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland). Wanting to see where the first movie post-ENDGAME goes is no-doubt a major factor for audiences, especially as the last trailer teased a mysterious Multi-Verse angle. Plus, the addition of actor Jake Gyllenhaal as the Spider-Man character Quentin Beck/Mysterio has made a big splash on social media, and he's been featured heavily in the promos. The second full trailer for the movie, released around the time of ENDGAME's release, broke viewing records for Sony with 135 million views in 24 hours. 

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME is in theaters July 3.
