Last night was a big night for two of the most anticipated movies of the summer – DEADPOOL 2 and SOLO: A STAR WAS STORY – as they screened for critics and journalists. You can read the praise for DP2 here, but soon to follow were reactions for SOLO, which could be even more hotly anticipated. Anyone worried that all the behind-the-scenes drama meant the movie was in a bad spot, or that Alden Ehrenreich wouldn't be up to snuff to play Han Solo, can put those worries/poorly-placed animosities to rest. Turns out SOLO is a terrific outer space adventure flick that manages to feel unique compared to any movie in the saga before it, featuring awesome action and brisk tone.

Along with great performances from Ehrenreich, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian (and some scene-stealing moments from the robot L3-37, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge), SOLO has some stirring emotional moments to match the action. Hell, one or two reactions even hinted at some Marvel-esque set-ups that could hint at future movies with the squad. Sure, the movie may struggle to find its footing or get caught up in prequel problems, but all of that other stuff sounds too awesome to care.
You can read the reactions below!
I figured if @DisneyStudios was willing to show 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' a few weeks before release it must be good and it absolutely is. Film is a blast and a welcome addition to the Star Wars universe. @RealRonHoward you did a great job. Congrats. pic.twitter.com/1pkWH2y6qE

It does take a bit to get used to Alden as Han, but after 30 minutes or so your brain adjusts. (Also I've now finally seen Clint Howard in a Star Wars movie.) #soloastarwarsstory

Oh, and this is for sure now the Solo Franchise. It's not really hiding the fact it's setting up more Han Solo movies.

Boom. #SoloAStarWarsStory Loved it. Stay off the internet! Avoid spoilers! Great job @RealRonHoward and cast!

Solo: A Star Wars Story is a goddamn delight. It’s a non-stop adventure packed with way more emotion than your expecting. You’ll have a smile on your face the whole time and leave eager for more. pic.twitter.com/fOsF7Tr95L

Alden Ehrenreich is the real deal, Thandie Newton is who I want to be when I grow up, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s L3… well we’ll talk about that later. 😃 #SoloAStarWarsStory

Solo: A Star Wars Story is… fine. It's slow to find its footing, but picks up in the second act, and it's definitely fun. Has the occasional prequel problem answering questions I didn't need answers to, but also some fun references. Overall I liked it, didn't love it pic.twitter.com/dV02yRYueA

Wow. Just come out of #SoloAStarWarsStory and can confirm it’s kinda a blast. @donaldglover was as perfect as expected, but Alden Ehrenreich has swagger to match, and spare.

Solo: A Star Wars Story has a light tone and has some great action sequences. There were great moments but some were a bit too on the nose for me. The Chewie/Han bromance is the thing to watch for.

#Solo was a blast. The Kasdans nail the character of Han Solo. Yes, the story is a series of expected events (Han meets chewie….etc) but none of them happen as expected. Stay away from spoilers, big Marvel-level shit that will make you wonder where Lucasfilm is headed next.

This is the grungiest, most grunt-level blue collar #StarWars ever and I am here for it. #Solo

#SoloAStarWarsStory: It takes a bit for it to find its feet and for AE to turn on enough charm to make you forget he’s not HF. But once it kicks into its hey-let’s-make-a-crew and yes-also-do-a-heist stuff, it totally flies.

There’s some fun to be had with #SoloAStarWarsStory. Ehrenreich was solid and really enjoyed Glover and Waller-Bridge as L3, but not convinced we needed a young Han Solo movie. Was really hoping for higher stakes, more energy and depth.

#SoloAStarWarsStory honestly has some of the best action this franchise has ever seen. Nothing like the Jedi vs Sith battles of previous #StarWars movies, but some really great sequences that show off the blaster work. Also, it's the first to truly show how powerful Chewie is pic.twitter.com/mm4e7lrk4n

So much for all that hate for Ehrenreich. I feel like I'm reading more good things about him than Glover, which is shocking considering how much swoon there was for him after the trailers. The actual review embargo for SOLO breaks on Tuesday, and you can come back for our own review then. So far things are looking good for this latest blockbuster on Star Wars saga, and we can probably expect more adventures from Solo and the gang. Was anyone doubting that? This movie will make a billion dollars.
SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY arrives May 25.
