Snowpiercer TV series renewed for season two ahead of series premiere

The upcoming television series SNOWPIERCER is already chugging along quite nicely, and even though no one has seen any of it we need to be prepared to get even more, as the show has already been renewed for a second season. The first season starring Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs hasn’t even debuted its first season, but WarnerMedia seems to have a lot of confidence in the series which has also been officially moved from TNT to TBS and is set to debut spring 2020.

Normally a comedy-centric station known for Conan O’Brien’s talk show, CONAN, and airing re-runs of shows like SEINFELD and movies from the mind of Adam Sandler, the network is hoping to get in on the drama game, and SNOWPIERCER is being seen as their golden ticket.

“Snowpiercer is the perfect show to kick-off TBS’ entry into dramas with intricate storytelling, stunning visuals and first-class acting,” said General Manager for TBS and TNT, Brett Weitz. “We believe in the longevity of this series and that audiences will be amazed by the fantastical world that brings to life such relevant social, political and environmental issues.”

Based on the critically acclaimed 2013 (2014 in US) film from Bong Joon Ho which is set years after a frozen apocalypse forces people to live on endlessly moving trains, the series also stars Rowan Blanchard, Susan Park, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand and Jaylin Fletcher. Joon Ho is also executive producing as is Scott Derrickson (DOCTOR STRANGE), James Hawes (BLACK MIRROR) and more with Graeme Manson (ORPHAN BLACK) as showrunner.

The first season of the show doesn't hit airwaves for the better part of a year, so getting a second season must mean they really have something here. The show has been in the works for a bit so they've probably had plenty of time to iron out the kinks and build the world. The original movie is spectacular, and there's plenty of material there to build on, so if TBS thinks they have their own GAME OF THRONES on their hands, all the more power to them.
