With all computer animation dominating the planet, it’s easy to forget that these movies still need the talent of hand-drawn artistry in order to be brought to life. Though Disney’s next movie, MOANA, looks to be pushing the boundaries of computer animation, its foundations were established and characters conceived with old school pencil and paper. Disney (via Collider) put out a compilation of storyboards and concept art showing how their next adventure came to life.
Showing off the different looks of Moana and Maui (including his eagle form), the images give us a look at how the new seafaring adventure developed and how the culture influenced the style of the characters. As well, there are some cool examples of early digital renderings, particularly the island, and Moana showing off some powers. Isn't animation just magical?
Take a look!
MOANA sets off for an adventure on November 23 starring Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Tudyk, Jemaine Clement and Nicole Scherzinger.
