Sam Raimi says they are “working on some ideas” for more Evil Dead

Fans of the EVIL DEAD series may have been more than a bit bummed out when the series ASH VS. EVIL DEAD was axed on Starz, but they may soon have their spirits picked up once more. Sam Raimi, director of the original trilogy of horror films starring Bruce Campbell and producer on the series, recently went on the record and said that despite the show’s cancellation there are already ideas cooking on how to bring the series back to life on the big screen.

Speaking with Bloody-Disgusting during the promotional run for the new Raimi-produced movie CRAWL the filmmaker was asked if fans have anything more to look forward to with EVIL DEAD. While he isn’t sure about its prospects for more television, Raimi did say the idea gears are moving for more movies.

“I’d love to make another one. I don’t think TV is in its future but we’re talking about – Bruce [Campbell], Rob [Tapert] and myself – one or two different ways to go for the next movie…We’d like to make another Evil Dead feature and in fact we’re working on some ideas right now.”

The first movie hit theaters in 1981, and the low-budget flick gathered a quick following and rave reviews, which led to an equally successful sequel in 1987 and a third movie, ARMY OF DARKNESS, in 1992. The original movie was remade in 2013 with director Fede Álvarez and star Jane Levy, and though not as successful with critics it made $97 million off a $17 million budget to become easily the highest-grossing movie in the series. 

It remains up in the air if a new movie would pick things back up with Campbell back in for more, or if it would continue off the 2013 film with Levy possibly returning, minus the arm she had to rip off.  Turns out Raimi has ideas for both possibilities, and even one should they have to start from scratch again.

“I would be thrilled if Bruce Campbell changed his mind about retirement, would come back for the original Evil Dead line. But if not, I’m very happy to work with, if Fede [Álvarez] would come back and make the sequel… but he’s such a big shot now. He’s so successful, an artist in demand, that I don’t think he’d want to do that.”

He continued, saying there’s a “third possibility we’re talking about,” but he didn’t elaborate any further.

While some people may not be fans of the remake I had a ton of fun with it, especially how Alvarez went way harder into the gore and nastiness, as well as the star-making work from Levy. I always wanted to see more of their vision, but if they continue the story with Campbell coming back, that’s cool too. Really, there's no wrong way to go, as EVIL DEAD has solidified itself as one of the most reliable horror series around, so whatever they come up with will probably we worth getting excited for.
