I suppose it was only a matter of time before the hugely popular X-MEN joined the long list of television superhero adaptations. Marvel has Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, DC has Flash and Arrow, and now the rumor circulating is that Fox Studios could be developing a live-action X-MEN show. You may remember back in April writer/producer Simon Kinberg said it would sense if this were to eventually happen.
“We’re still in this place of figuring out what the future of the franchise will be, but when you look at S.H.I.E.L.D. to some extent and what Marvel is doing now with Daredevil and other shows on Netflix, it makes sense to tell some of these stories in TV partly because there’s just not enough screens to do all these characters, and also because the serialized format of comic books is better suited for TV,” because that’s it, every week you come back to the same characters different story, and in comic books every week it’s the same characters, different story.”
While there isn’t any solid evidence just yet to suggest this is a for sure thing, it’s a safe bet that a franchise like X-MEN could easily be turned into weekly serial and will someday. I can’t imagine any big name mutants on the show however, unless it’s a rating boost guest spot. That should strike fear into anyone who remembers the 1996 made-for-TV movie Generation X.
What are your hopes for an X-MEN TV series? Would you want it set in Bryan Singer’s universe? What characters should it focus on?
