Ron Yuan to helm cyberpunk sequel to Keanu Reeves’ 47 Ronin

Based very loosely on the Japanese legend, 47 RONIN starred Keanu Reeves as a half-Japanese, half-English outcast who joins forces with a group of ronin out to avenge the death of their master. From a visual and production design perspective, the 2013 film was quite spectacular, but that's as far as the praise went and 47 RONIN went on to become one of the biggest box-office bombs of the year, so why not make a sequel?

According to Deadline, Ron Yuan (STEP UP CHINA) has signed on to direct an untitled sequel to 47 RONIN which will be produced by Universal and distributed by Netflix. However, it sounds as though the sequel won't have all that much to do with the original film as it will be set 300 years in the future in an exotic cyberpunk world. The project is also said to be a "fresh, re-imagined take on the original feature and will incorporate horror along with modern samurai and ninja elements." Production on the 47 RONIN sequel is expected to kick off early 2021. "I’m incredibly excited to be working with Universal and the producing team on this genre-blending, martial arts, action, horror and cyber-punk film," said Yuan in a statement. "This will be a fun, intense, supercharged thrill ride for viewers globally." Although Yuan will be stepping behind the camera for this project, he's primarily known for his appearances in front of the camera. Yuan has appeared in TV shows such as Prison Break, Sons of Anarchy, and Marco Polo, as well as feature-films like THE ACCOUNTANT, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, as well as Disney's upcoming live-action adaptation of MULAN. The Disney film will debut on Disney+ on September 4, 2020, but you'll have to shell out an additional $29.99 if you want to watch it.
