There's been a lot of talk about whether or not Ridley Scott would tackle either PROMETHEUS 2 or BLADE RUNNER 2 after he's done shooting THE MARTIAN. Well, we can cross BLADE RUNNER 2 off the list as Scott recently spoke with Variety about the return of Rick Deckard and said that while he would produce the film, he would NOT be in the director's chair.

Ridley Scott on the story for BLADE RUNNER 2:

We talked at length about what it could be, and came up with a pretty strong three-act storyline, and it all makes sense in terms of how it relates to the first one. Harrison is very much part of this one, but really it’s about finding him; he comes in in the third act.

I'm not saying that a great BLADE RUNNER 2 film can't be made without Scott in the director's chair, but this admittedly diminishes my excitement for it. Even if PROMETHEUS didn't deliver on all fronts, I enjoyed having Scott return to that Alien universe and deliver something that was better than ALIEN 3 and RESURRECTION. Combined. The fact that he's not up for returning to Deckard's universe seems to suggest that he's either not invested enough in the story or he has something else on his plate. As much as I want him to do PROMETHEUS 2, I have a hard time believing that picture would garner more favor than BR2. Perhaps he has no intention of doing PROMETHEUS 2 at all, and is looking at another project? Color me intrigued.

Ridley Scott's latest, EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, can be seen in theaters on December 12.
