Constantin Film announced today that it has an official origin story adaptation for the Resident Evil franchise in development with 47 METERS DOWN series writer-director Johannes Roberts. The story is said to be set in 1998 and takes place in Racoon City. The project will star iconic characters from Capcom's classic survival horror games.
Set to star in the reboot is Maze Runner alumna Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, Killjoys) as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (THE BABYSITTER, THE BABYSITTER: KILLER QUEEN) as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy)as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia (The Stranger, ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP) as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough (MINORITY REPORT, Legends of Tomorrow)as William Birkin.
“With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences," said Roberts, in anticipation of presenting his own spin on the iconic material.
Franchise producer Robert Kulzer will once again produce via Constantin with James Harris from Tea Shop Productions and Hartley Gorenstein.
“After a dozen games, six live-action movies, and hundreds of pages of fan fiction, we felt compelled to return to the year 1998, to explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spenser Mansion and Raccoon City," said Kulzer about the reboot.
In addition to the aforementioned reboot, Netflix also has its own Resident Evil series adaptation set to hit the streamer in 2021. Their version is a CGI animated series called Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, which centers on fan-favorite characters Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy, for a show that will “add suspense into dynamic action scenes” to “reveal a Resident Evil world unlike anything seen before."
There sure is quite a lot of Resident Evil-related projects on the way, eh? Between the film reboot, Netflix's CGI animated series, and Capcom's upcoming video game sequel Resident Evil Village, I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps this is all too much. Ah, who am I kidding?
