Last week, Universal set the date for their next monster movie following the retconned DRACULA UNTOLD and Alex Kurtzman‘s reboot of THE MUMMY. Which monster remained a mystery, but it looks like we can now assume it will be THE WOLFMAN.
Deadline reports that PRISONERS screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski is being talked to about rebooting THE WOLFMAN as a part of the new shared cinematic universe the studio is plotting with Kurtzman. THE WOLFMAN was most recently rebooted by Joe Johnston in the 2010 bomb that starred Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, and Emily Blunt. It is unknown if THE WOLFMAN reboot will be what is slotted into the announced 2017 date or if they are too early in pre-production.
Rumors have THE MUMMY reboot being set in a contemporary period which would likely mean THE WOLFMAN will as well unless they plan to make it a CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER style origin before fast-forwarding to the present day. If DRACULA UNTOLD is part of the universe, that film may be the only period set in the new franchise. I was a fan of the 2010 take but it really depends on what the grand scheme is with this universe and what we can expect. I am holding out hope for the studio to bring all the monsters together for an AVENGERS-style reboot of THE MONSTER SQUAD.
The new WOLF MAN may premiere on April 27, 2017.
