Over a decade ago, Paranormal Activity was unleashed upon audiences and became one of the most profitable films ever made and spawned a new horror franchise. The found-footage film, which was written, directed, produced, and edited by Oren Peli on a micro-budget, followed a young couple (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) who are haunted by a supernatural presence in their home. The film was followed by five sequels, the last of which, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, under-performed at the box-office in 2015 and received largely negative reviews.
Although the last film may have stalled, it seems that you can't keep a good spirit down as it was announced in 2019 that Paramount was developing another installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise, but THR has reported that the project will now be a reboot that will be directed by Will Eubank (Underwater) and written by Christopher Landon (Freaky). It's said that the new project will be an "unexpected retooling" of the franchise, but that it will continue to be in the found-footage format. Blumhouse Productions' Jason Blum and Oren Peli will return as producers and the reboot is already slated to hit theaters on March 4, 2022. Although director Will Eubank is new to the franchise, writer Christopher Landon had a hand in penning four of the previous Paranormal Activity movies and also directed Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, so he's certainly no stranger to creeping dread and jump scares.
