With production on Shane Black's THE PREDATOR due to kick off next February, it seems that the cast has begun to come together. After Benicio del Toro sadly departed the project last month, the lead role was swiftly filled by Boyd Holbrook (LOGAN), and now THR has reported that Olivia Munn (X-MEN: APOCALYPSE) is currently in negotiations to join Holbrook in a starring role.
THR's report also contains a few details about what sort of characters Olivia Munn and Boyd Holbrook will be playing; apparently Munn's role is that of a scientist and Holbrook will be filling the combat boots of a Special Forces commando. As for the plot, we still don't know all that much just yet, but we do know that THE PREDATOR won't be taking place in the jungle, Los Angeles or on a alien world; Instead, our fearsome alien hunter will find himself in "the harsh environment of … suburbia." I can't imagine what would possibly bring a Predator to the suburbs, but with Shane Black at the helm, I'm certainly excited to find out.
Speaking of Black, the writer/director recently spoke exclusively with JoBlo's own Eric Walkuski and was asked whether he considers THE PREDATOR to be a sequel or a reboot. "I think it has to stand on its own two feet," said Black. "But our goal is to make sure it acknowledges that, yeah, it is 30 years later in the continuity of the story. In other words, Dutch Schaefer's patrol, which was attacked and largely slaughtered, happened 30 years ago in the context of the story. It's referenced, it's part of the mythology. In that way, it's more of a sequel than a reboot." THE PREDATOR is set for a February 9, 2018 release. As for Munn, she'll next be appearing in OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY on December 9, 2016.
