Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming crime series gets a stunning first trailer

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

With so much happening at this year's Cinemacon experience, it's easy to lose track of all the exciting announcements happening outside of the show. Today, Amazon Studios has debuted a mesmerizing trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn and Ed Brubaker's TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG, an upcoming 10-episode thriller that looks to be just as mysterious as it is psychedelic. Oh, and a word to the wise, you might want to "diaper-up" for this one, because each episode is 90-minutes each, making every chapter a feature-length presentation. In fact, composer and frequent Refn collaborator Cliff Martinez told Screendaily back in January that those looking forward to the show should think of it as “a 16-hour movie.”

Starring Miles Teller, Billy Baldwin, Jena Malone, John Hawkes, Cristina Rodlo, Augusto Aguilera, Nell Tiger Free, Babs Olusanmokun, Callie Hernandez, TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG tells the sordid tale of a grieving police officer who, along with the man who shot his partner, finds himself in an underworld filled with working-class hit men, Yakuza soldiers, cartel assassins sent from Mexico, Russian mafia captains and gangs of teen killers.

Directed and co-written by Refn alongside writer Ed Brubaker (My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, Criminal, Kill or be Killed), the duo's hard-boiled neo-noir looks to be a feast for the senses, with plenty of atmosphere, mind-boggling imagery and mystery to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

Brubaker spoke with THR about the series in October of 2018, telling the outlet “It’s the most Nicolas Winding Refn thing that ever existed, honestly.” He then added, “It’s stylish and shocking, it has some of the best cinematography ever for television (our lead DP was the great Darius Khondji, so of course it does), and at the same time it is a meditation on these characters trapped in this world that’s not too unlike the world all around us, that feels like it’s about to fall apart, or maybe be torn apart…It’s also the most exhausting thing I’ve ever done, writing that show with Nic. We had a 10-month shoot, which I think might be a record, with one director shooting it all.”
