I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I am so f*cking down for the premise of BRIGHT. A mixture of gritty cop drama and high fantasy? I've been wanting to see something like this forever! And while movies like SORCERER'S APPRENTICE or LAST WITCH HUNTER came close, they still dealt with "the masquerade" (meaning magic wasn't out in the open), and only dealt with humans. However BRIGHT will feature Orcs, Elves, fairies, and all manner of magical creatures!
The plot of BRIGHT follows human cop Scott Ward (Will Smith) as he's assigned to the first ever Orc cop, Nick Jakoby (Joel Edgerton). Together they must find a young Elf girl (Lucy Fry) in possession of a highly powerful, and illegal, weapon: a magical wand. Ward and Jakoby aren't the only ones looking for the wand though, evading not only criminals, but corrupt cops and magical creatures as well. It's being described as END OF WATCH meets LORD OF THE RINGS.
Doesn't that sound awesome! And none other than David Ayer will be directing! Having dabbled in both cop drama (the aforementioned END OF WATCH) and magic (in SUICIDE SQUAD, where he also directed Will Smith), let's hope Ayer finds the right balance between the two disparate genres.
And now we have our first look at Will Smith on the set of the film. Take a look!
Hmm. You know, I actually really like how contemporary and normal the duds look. It will hopefully be a nice contrast when we see him next to Joel Edgerton as an Orc, or the other magical creatures that will show up in the film as well.
But what do you guys think? You down for this genre mash-up? Sound off below!
BRIGHT will stream on Netflix sometime mid-to-late 2017.
