For you James Bond and BACK TO THE FUTURE fans who have yet to pick up box sets of either series, you might want to hold off for just a few more months. Both MGM and Universal are re-releasing each in snazzy new boxes with some extra features to boot. Let’s break it down!
First up is Bond. As you can see from the picture above, we’ll finally have a set that fits on a shelf! Imagine that! This set will also include two new featurettes based on interviews with renowned Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. First up is “The Shadow of SPECTRE”, which concentrates on the history of SPECTRE, the fictional global criminal syndicate and terrorist organization. The second featurette, “The Story So Far”, recaps and relives the significant moments from the previous three Daniel Craig Bond films. Fluff? Perhaps, but this set may be worth it for the more manageable box set alone. And for those of you who are into steelbooks, you’re REALLY gonna love the following!
Limited edition Blu-ray steelbooks will also be made available that include six films featuring the SPECTRE organization (FROM RUSSIAN WITH LOVE, THUNDERBALL, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY) as well as the three recent Daniel Craig titles (CASINO ROYALE, QUANTUM OF SOLACE, SKYFALL). As you can tell from the picture above, each features packaging inspired by the films’ iconic opening title sequences. Noice! These sets will be made available on September 15th!
Also on the re-release docket is the BACK TO THE FUTURE 30th Anniversary trilogy. Join Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and a time traveling DeLorean for the adventure of a lifetime as they travel to the past, present and future, setting off a time-shattering chain reaction that disrupts the space time continuum! From filmmakers Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, this set includes over 2 hours of new bonus features not available previously (of which I’ve detailed for you below).
- All New Original Shorts: Including Doc Brown Saves the World!, starring Christopher Lloyd.
- OUTATIME: Restoring the DeLorean: An inside look at the 2012 restoration of the most iconic car in film history.
- Looking Back to the Future: A 9-part retrospective documentary from 2009 on the trilogy’s legacy.
- Back to the Future: The Animated Series: 2 episodes (“Brothers” and “Mac the Black”) from the 1991 series featuring live action segments with Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown.
- Tales from the Future 6-Part Documentary
For you completists, the Back to the Future: The Complete Animated Series DVD will be avaialable on the same day. You can also purchase both the new Blu-ray collection and Animated Series DVD in one set featuring the flux capacitor. The video/audio transfers of the films will most likely be the same from the previous set, so this looks like something reserved for die hard fans and those who don’t already own it. You can pick any of these up on October 20th! For kicks, I’ve also included Universal’s promo for the set that features some awful music. What happened to Huey Lewis or Alan Silvestri’s score?!?
