Netflix is entering 2021 in a big way in terms of delivering original films and they're making that known by promising a new film every week this year on the platform.
This was actually teased last October in national commercial spots but Netflix is now guaranteeing its 193 million subscribers and counting that they will get a new movie every week in 2021. The films will largely be compromised of original productions but there will also be some high-profile acquisitions as well. The film slate consists of 71 titles that are spread across all genres. Needless to say, Netflix believes they have everything you need for entertainment in 2021.
The sizzle reel that Netflix released to tease their big year features an array of big stars including Dwayne Johnson, Halle Berry, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Momoa, Ryan Reynolds, Amy Adams, Chris Hemsworth, and Lin-Manual Miranda, to name a few. Highlights of the reel include the heist film Red Notice, starring Johnson, Reynolds, and Gal Gadot; Adams' The Woman in The Window; the Western The Harder They Fall with Regina King, Idris Elba, and Jonathan Majors; Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tick, tick…Boom!; Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead; and Don't Look Up, which features an all-star cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Timothee Chalamet, Ariana Grande, and Kid Cudi. Also making a return are top-rated franchises that were homegrown at Netflix. To all the Boys I've Loved Before is returning with a third installment, as is The Kissing Booth. Both franchises have been remarkably successful for Netflix so it comes as no surprise that they'll be making a third splash on the platform.
The timing of this release strategy comes at a great time for Netflix. In the wake of the global pandemic, traditional moviegoing has been seriously derailed and streaming has taken a front seat since movie theaters began to shutter last March. Their ability to release new films is pretty much unhampered by the pandemic and it just proves that they continue to be singularly motivated in terms of releasing original content. There is a reason why they continue to win the streaming wars and their 2021 plan just provides another example.
