Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen says the big screen reboot will not connect to the web series

Director Kevin Tancharoen has succesfully transformed his well-crafted MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH pitch reel into the great web series MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY which is now entering into a second season. Tancharoen is also still attached to direct the long in development third MORTAL KOMBAT film. As LEGACY continues to develop storylines for classic characters like Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub Zero and others, it leaves the question as to the status and direction of MORTAL KOMBAT III. Will it follow the stories from LEGACY? Will it feature the same actors?

According to Tancharoen, the answer is neither. In an interview with Coming Soon, the director gave this update on the third film in the series:

“We’re still pushing through on that. The script is in a good place, we’re just kind of figuring out the budget and locations and that whole process is where we’re at,”

At last update, the third MORTAL KOMBAT was being written by Oren Uziel (22 JUMP STREET, MEN IN BLACK 4) who also wrote REBIRTH for Tancharoen. But, what will the actual film be about?

“I think everyone’s intention is to start fresh because we want Legacy to live on its own possibly for multiple seasons, and when it comes to Mortal Kombat, it’s been around for 20+ years. We’re going to take the mythology and add another layer on it so it can live on for another 20 years, or more! I think this is a unique opportunity to set that ground work.”

So, we still don’t know whether or not the new MORTAL KOMBAT will be an R-rated film like Tancharoen’s REBIRTH short proposed or if it will be more along the lines of Paul. W.S. Anderson’s PG-13 original from 1995. Either way, we still have MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY II premiering on September 26th with the talents of Casper Van Dien and the original Shang Tsung himself, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.
