UPDATE: At a HACKSAW RIDGE screening last night (via Batman-News), Gibson confirmed that he is indeed in talks with WB to take on the SUICIDE SQUAD sequel, but that it was a "first date" kind of scenario, so nothing is set in stone. Justin Kroll of Variety had a few updates of his own after the report first dropped. You can see his tweets, as well as the original video of Mel confirming the "first date" below…
Couple updates on the SUICIDE SQUAD director search since I posted after a few calls. First if Mel wants it, it's his.

@krolljvar while some might say he said he would never do a comic book movie, heard he is more intrigued by this cast then material

Will and Mel actually wanted to do THE ACCOUNTANT years ago but old regime didn't want Mel but shows how much Mel want to work with Will

First off, hell to the yes! Although SUICIDE SQUAD definitely had its fans, Warner Bros. is going to have to pull out all the stops to make sure that its upcoming sequel is a success on all fronts, and nabbing Mel Gibson (HACKSAW RIDGE) to direct would certainly be a great step in that direction.
THR reports that Warner Bros. are courting Mel Gibson to take the helm of the SUICIDE SQUAD sequel, but that there are other candidates up for the job as well, including Daniel Espinosa (LIFE). Talks are still in the early stages, but THR's sources state that Mel Gibson is "familiarizing himself with the material." After making a triumphant return with HACKSAW RIDGE, his first directorial outing in a decade, Gibson has been flooded with offers to both act in and direct a variety of projects, but the SUICIDE SQUAD sequel would certainly be an exciting choice. David Ayer, who directed the first installment, will of course remain involved in the DCEU as he's currently developing GOTHAM CITY SIRENS, a SUICIDE SQUAD spinoff which will star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and showcase the "top female villains from the DC stable" including Catwoman and Poison Ivy.
This is far from a sure thing, but how would you folks feel about Mel Gibson taking the reins of SUICIDE SQUAD 2?
