Martin Freeman’s character has a big part to play in future Marvel films

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

While Martin Freeman has brought his tendency to flip the bird at all opportunities to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we still don't know all that much about his character, but thanks to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, we know that his appearance in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR won't be the last we see of him. Kevin Feige spoke to Entertainment Weekly recently and while he wouldn't reveal anything about Martin Freeman's character (pft, typical), he did confirm that he will be returning for future MCU films.

He’s under the cloak of secrecy. There are a lot of amazing actors in this movie. Some of them play larger roles than others.  And in some cases there are some you will meet ever so briefly in this film and then will be expanded upon in future films. He falls into that latter category.

More Martin Freeman is never a bad thing in my opinion, and while it's sad that his appearance in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR will be limited, it's good to know what we'll be seeing more of him. Earlier this year Martin Freeman gave a few teases about his characters ambiguous nature as well as his role in the MCU.

He works in conjunction with the superheroes and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes' power. You're not quite sure which side he's on. It looks a little bit like he's playing one game, when he's playing another. It's the kind of character I like because he's ambiguous and because you don't know whether he's good or bad. And I like that area which isn't black or white. I like the greys, because there's more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
