Lucifer will raise hell for a sixth and final season on Netflix

Fresh off its season five premiere date reveal yesterday, Lucifer is hitting us with some more big news. Netflix has announced that the popular series has been renewed for a sixth and final season. The streamer made the announcement on Lucifer's official Twitter page.

Perhaps Lucifer has made its own deal with the Devil over the years. The series premiered in 2014 on FOX and ran on the network for three seasons before they canceled it. This sparked a massive response from fans who mounted full-on petitions to save the show and Netflix heard their call. The streaming giant resurrected Lucifer for a fourth season which debuted last May.

In June of last year, Netflix renewed Lucifer for a 10-episode fifth and final season and that also led to the show's fans crying foul. A month after the announcement, Netflix increased the order to 16 episodes and rumors started swirling that Netflix was reconsidering ending the show. Star Tom Ellis had to rework his contract in order to make a sixth season happen and that hit a tiny snag which almost put the sixth season in question. The Devil clearly wasn't having any of that and eventually, the parties came to an agreement for a sixth season which brings us to today's huge renewal news. 

In the series, Lucifer Morningstar has decided he's had enough of being the dutiful servant in Hell and decides to spend some time on Earth to better understand humanity. While meeting with a Detective in his nightclub, a shootout involving him and the Detective leads him to become an LAPD consultant who tries to punish people for their crimes through law and justice.

Before season 6 arrives, fans still have to get through season 5 which will be released in two parts. The fifth season will pick up with Lucifer (Ellis) back in hell and according to the official tease for the first eight episodes, "Lucifer makes a tumultuous return, Chloe rethinks romance, Ella finally finds a nice guy, and Amenadiel adjusts to the whole fatherhood thing." Fans can also look forward to the introduction of 24's Dennis Haysbert as God, a musical episode, and the return of Inbar Lave as Eve.

Lucifer, which also stars Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Scarlet Estevez, Racheal Harris, D.B. Woodside, Aimee Garcia, and Tricia Helfer, will premiere season 5A on August 21, 2020.
