Pixar, a studio that's notorious for leaving their fans emotionally crippled while reaching for a box of Kleenex, has revealed a new image for Luca, an upcoming animated feature from director Enrico Casarosa. Lovingly crafted while using a blend of fact and folklore, Luca is set on the coast of Italy in the dazzling summer days. Its central character, Luca, and his friend Alberto are actually sea creatures who appear human on dry land, but take on a fishier form underwater. Taking a beat from Disney's The Little Mermaid, the pair get to experience life up where they walk, run, and stay all day in the sun – befriending a human girl along the way. (via Empire)
Recently, while speaking with Empire, Casarosa explained to the outlet that Luca is inspired by a more magical time within his childhood.
“I met my best friend when I was 11. I was really shy and I found this troublemaker of a kid who had a completely different life. I wanted to make a movie about those kinds of friendships that help you grow up,” the director said. Casarosa then went on to explain that the film includes nods to Fellini as well as other classic Italian filmmakers. He also says that glimmers of Studio Ghibli legend Hayao Miyazaki can be found in the film as well, particularly in its more fantastical elements.
Ah, Pixar, you won't be satisfied until you've reduced me to a fetal-positioned sobbing mess, will you? I feel like that aspect of your storytelling is baked into every contract you draw up. I can imagine it now: Will it make audiences cry? Um, yes? Then you're hired! I know what you're up to. You can't fool me.
Directed by Casarosa, Luca is scheduled for a June 18, 2021 release.
