Whoa! Someone must have slipped a red pill into my iced tea this afternoon, because we've just learned that Warner Bros. is re-teaming with Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Lana Wachowski for an all-new film hailing from THE MATRIX universe. According to reports, Wachowski will co-write and direct the new film, which is set to be co-produced by Warner Bros. alongside the franchise's original co-producer Village Roadshow. Lana Wachowski will also produce with Grant Hill in addition to penning the screenplay with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell.
“We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” said Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman, Toby Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”
Holy shit, you guys! Can you imagine what this film will look like given today's incredible special effects programs and digital filming technology? Moreover, Lana Wachowski helped deliver one of the most emotionally devastating series in Netflix history with her sci-fi opus, SENSE8. I can only hope that her time working on that show will lend incredibly well to the drama of this Matrix-related project, which has the potential to take the franchise to parts unknown and beyond!
In the past, the Wachowskis wrote and directed three films in THE MATRIX universe – THE MATRIX (1999), THE MATRIX RELOADED (2003) and THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS (2003). All told, the three films grossed a combined total of $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. Additionally, all were Top 10 domestic charters in their year of release. Following the core trilogy, a number of video game and animated adaptations were released, such as MATRIX RELOADED, a tour de force of animated excellence featuring some of the best animators in the game.
Recently, it was announced that special 20th anniversary screenings of THE MATRIX are being held at select AMC Theaters locations across the U.S. beginning on August 30.
I'll say it again, whoa! I suppose that I shouldn't be surprised that THE MATRIX is coming back around the mountain, what with all the remakes, reboots and whatnot being announced almost on the daily. Honestly though, I'm finding myself extremely pumped for this announcement. My body is ready for more Matrix-oriented mayhem. How about you?
