Kevin Feige confirms plans for Phase 5 are already mapped out

The biggest of all the Comic-Con news last week was Marvel’s entire announcement of their Phase 4 lineup, which for the first time included television shows to go along with their movies. Among the shows are WANDAVISION, LOKI, HAWKEYE, FALCON AND WINTER SOLDIER and WHAT IF…, with the movies being BLACK WIDOW, ETERNALS, DOCTOR STRANGE: IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER and SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS. All of that is across the next two years, and knowing how Marvel does its thing, we can assume they already have Phase 5 ready to go. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed as much after announcing Phase 4, saying they indeed know what’s set for the next several years.

After their big Comic-Con event that, one could say, caused some structural damage to the roof, Feige was asked by MTV News (via Collider) if they know what things look like even further down the road, especially as it relates to the Avengers lineup.

“We debated what we should announce today,” Feige said. “Should we announce 4 and 5? We’ve planned them out, we’ve got five years down the road and I was like, I think eleven projects in two years is plenty. Having not mentioned anything for two or three years.” He continued, saying that the next team of Avengers will look “very different" from the team of the past, featuring characters that haven’t even been introduced to audiences yet. That could include Kate Bishop, who will be introduced in the HAWKEYE series, as well as Shang-Chi, who gets his first solo movie in 2021.

One thing you may be noticing is how Feige said “11 projects”, while the confirmed list for Phase 4 is a solid 10 movies. Towards the end of the presentation, Feige got the crowd roaring by dropping news about the new BLADE movie with Mahershala Ali set to star. Feige spoke with Collider after the presentation, saying this lineup for the next two years is “the complete Phase Four the way I announced the complete Phase Three five years ago.” This means BLADE probably won’t be seen until Phase 5, which will kick off in 2022. He also confirmed they have plans for BLACK PANTHER 2, CAPTAIN MARVEL 2, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 3, FANTASTIC FOUR and other projects – which we can assume will make up Phase 5 (along with more shows).

While everything here seems set in stone, Feige also mentioned how things could be subject to change. Shall we not remember how Marvel had plans for the INHUMANS movie when they announced Phase 3, all before those were scrapped and the characters got their own show that we do not dare think about? We also have to factor in the biggest surprise to the MCU, the addition of Spider-Man, who was introduced in CIVIL WAR before getting his own solo movie — certainly not the plan when Phase 3 was announced. That's not to say anything will be shaken up, but who knows, maybe things will be added or shifted. But considering the ten different projects across two years, I think that's a solid number to stick with.

The first of Marvel's new projects, the BLACK WIDOW movie, is in theaters May 1, 2020.
