Last month, it was announced to much fanfare that Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Lana Wachowski would be returning for another installment of THE MATRIX franchise. It's been 15 years since THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS arrived in theaters, yet the call for another chapter of the series has never been stronger. Like any sci-fi series worth its salt, THE MATRIX managed to become an integral part of the pop culture zeitgeist between the years 1999-2004. In fact, it used to be that you couldn't enter any mall within the United States without coming into contact with a group of Gen Xers clad in trench coat attire complete with Ray-Ban sunglasses, indoors or out. They were everywhere, ready and willing to swallow the red pill if it would grant them knowledge about the world beyond the veil. To be honest, it was all pretty obnoxious, but I'll be damned if those Matrix films weren't a blast!

Recently while attending a special screening of SEMPER FI, a film produced by his own sister, Kaina Miller, Reeves was approached by Entertainment Tonight and questioned about the upcoming Matrix project. Without hesitation, Reeves told the outlet that he's "absolutely" excited about what Lana Wachowski has planned for his iconic character, Neo. When asked if he's had a chance to read the script, Reeves confirmed that yes, he has, adding that "It's very ambitious. As it should be!"

It's a fact that Reeves isn't the only one who's jazzed about returning to the Matrix franchise. Back in August, when word first broke about Wachowski and her crew delving back into franchise, Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich expressed his excitement by saying: “We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana,” Emmerich crowed. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”

Lana Wachowski then added her voice to the buzz by explaining that, “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,”

Filming for the next chapter of THE MATRIX is expected to begin sometime in 2020. With any luck and bit of monetary massaging, we'll receive word of even more players from the original trilogy being ready and willing to tumble down the Matrix rabbit hole once more. With special effects technology having grown by leaps and bounds since the last installment, once can only begin to imagine how epic and outrageous a modern day take on the premise could be. Your body is not ready, so I guess it's a good thing that we've still got some time.
