THE MATRIX stands not only one of the greatest movies of the 90’s, but also in the entirety of the sci-fi/action genre. Influential for so many reasons, the first MATRIX is a classic worthy of a time capsule being sent into space for aliens to find. The sequels…not so much. Still, that isn’t stopping fans from wanting a fourth outing, which they may get if the planets align in just the right way, and if Keanu Reeves' requirements are met.
While talking with Yahoo about JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2, Reeves was asked about the possibility of returning for a fourth MATRIX movie featuring his character, Neo. Though he sounded a bit unsure the movie could even happen, he has his own conditions that would need to be met in order for him to even consider it:
The Wachowskis would have to be involved. They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not? People die, stories don’t, people in stories don’t.
Of course this is no indication anyone is trying to make this happen, but it's encouraging to know Reeves hasn't slammed the door shut. Anyone who has seen the final movie in the MATRIX trilogy, THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS, knows Neo dies at the end, but Oracle hints this may not be the last we see of him. Like Reeves said, people in stories don’t die, and in a world like the one in MATRIX anything is possible…even another good MATRIX movie.
It’s no doubt the final two movies left a bad taste in fans mouths, but I think enough time has passed for a fourth movie to be welcomed completely. Nowadays, with nostalgia playing a big role in the marketplace, if the Wachowskis and the cast wanted to return I’m sure the studio would be down. No matter what happens Reeves has found a new franchise in JOHN WICK, and for that alone he deserves his own statue in a fancy park.
JOHN WICK 2 is in theaters now. Like, RIGHT NOW!!
