John Krasinski teases the new characters of A Quiet Place: Part II

For the most part, A QUIET PLACE focused on the Abbott family, but following the events of the first film, the upcoming sequel will find the Abbotts forced to roam into a larger world filled with other survivors, some of whom haven't been quite as fortunate as the Abbotts. "[Our] family has support, they have an entire system of living, and most importantly, they have love," A QUIET PLACE: PART II writer/director John Krasinski said while speaking with Entertainment Weekly. "If you are alone and you’ve seen the negative effect of the world, you lose hope."

John Krasinski spoke of two of the new survivors, played by Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders) and Djimon Hounsou (CAPTAIN MARVEL), and how their experiences have differed from the Abbotts'. As we've seen from the trailers, Murphy's character has had a bit of a harder time, and Kraskinsi said that he represents "survival in its purest form, which is really, really dark." As for Hounsou, his character is "doing slightly better" and has "found a way to live somewhat similarly to our family, and you have to figure out why he was able to do this." Emily Blunt added that one of the major themes of the sequel is, "How far would you go to extend your hand to your neighbor? I think that fractured sense of community that we’re probably feeling on quite a global scale now is quite nice to talk about."

Although John Krasinski initially didn't want anything to do with a sequel to A QUIET PLACE, he soon "Jedi-mindtricked" himself into directing it. Does that mean he's now open to returning for a third installment? It's too early to say, but Krasinski does say that he has some ideas for another sequel, which may even be hinted at in PART II, but for now, he's just concentrating on getting the film ready in time for release. "I hope people think the movie is as good as I think it is," Krasinski said. "Because I had the same anxieties that [the fans] did when I heard they were making a sequel: ‘Why are they doing that?’ Hopefully I answered that question."

Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family (Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe) must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.

.A QUIET PLACE: PART II will hit theaters on March 20, 2020.
