John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein on what drew them to Flashpoint

It seems hopeful that the revolving door of director's for Warner Bros.' FLASHPOINT has swung around for the last time. It was reported last month that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were in talks to sign on to direct the standalone FLASH movie. Seth Grahame-Smith was originally on-board to write and direct the film, but he soon exited the project and was replaced by Rick Famuyiwa, who also wound up leaving after disagreeing with the studio in regards to where to take the story. While speaking with Collider, the new directors cautioned that their deal with Warner Bros. isn't yet finalized, so they're not officially on board just yet, but they did reveal what it was about FLASHPOINT which drew them to the project.

"Just the fact that the character is unique from other superheroes in that he doesn’t completely have his shit together like Superman does. It’s more of a ground-level superhero," Daley said, with Goldstein adding that "It’s a relatable way in to a superhero movie in some of the same ways that Peter Parker was for the Marvel side of things." Neither John Francis Daley nor Jonathan Goldstein are strangers to the comic-book genre, having penned the recent SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING; in fact, the pair were actually being considered to direct the Spidey flick before Jon Watts signed on. When Warner Bros. came calling, it was because of their work on both SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING as well as the upcoming GAME NIGHT, and the studio gave them a list of DC properties and asked if there was anything they'd be interesting in working on.

They were interested in us because of Game Night and Spider-Man. Because of that combination they did kind of say, ‘We’d like you to consider one of our movies.’ So we read a number of the scripts, and that was one—we’re huge fans of the character, I collected the comic books as a kid. It was an exciting possibility.

Given the history of the project, I'm not about to begin jumping with joy that FLASHPOINT appears to be moving forward, but it certainly seems that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are passionate about the character. Are they the right choice to helm FLASHPOINT or are you hoping somebody else comes along?
