Joaquin Phoenix is now in final negotiations to play Doctor Strange

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It seems like it was forever ago, but it was just last month that we heard the rumor that Joaquin Phoenix was in talks to star in Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE. Since then, new rumors have cropped up, including one naming Jack Huston as a contender. But, it looks like the old rumor may be the strongest one.

Collider claims on good authority that not only is Phoenix still the top contender for the role of Strange but his negotiations are currently at the “one yard line”. That means it is very close to being a done deal for the non-fans of American football.

If Phoenix is named as the lead in DOCTOR STRANGE, he would represent the biggest star yet to headline a Marvel movie. While Robert Downey Jr was redeemed by his IRON MAN role, he was not a huge star when that film was announced. All other superhero stars in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe have been relative unknowns with the big names appearing as supporting characters or in villain roles. Phoenix and his Oscar-winning resume will bring another level of respect to the comic book universe that has already gained immense trust from the fan community.

DOCTOR STRANGE, directed by Scott Derrickson, will hit theaters on July 8, 2016.
