Thanks to THE INVISIBLE MAN, the Universal Monsters are back on track following the disaster which was the Dark Universe, and according to THR, James Wan will be teaming up with Universal Pictures for an untitled monster movie which seems to be inspired by those classic stories.
James Wan will produce the new film, which THR's sources say will take "its cues from Universal’s classic monster legacy and shines it through a modern prism. With shades of Disturbia, the story will focus on a group of teens who discover that a neighbor is building a monster in his basement. Spoiler: the monster gets loose." Robbie Thompson, a longtime writer on The CW's Supernatural, is penning the script for the untitled film. Based on the brief snippet of information provided by THR, it certainly seems as though the project will have a little FRANKENSTEIN in its blood; speaking of the classic Universal Monster, Blumhouse Productions' CEO Jason Blum recently revealed that he'd love to tackle the character.
I’d love to do Frankenstein. I’ve tasked our filmmakers with trying to figure out just straight Frankenstein. Again, I don’t know if someone else is doing it, I don’t know anything about it, but I would love to try and I’m waiting for the great idea…the best ideas feel like, ‘My gosh, it’s so obvious, why didn’t that happen before?’ If we could come up with something as good for Frankenstein, I’d love to try that.
THE INVISIBLE MAN is now playing in theaters, so be sure to check out a review from our own Matt Rooney! James Wan's next film, MALIGNANT, will hit theaters on August 14, 2020, and Wan's Atomic Monster production company has a variety of projects just over the horizon as well, including THE CONJURING: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT on September 11, 2020, THERE'S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE for Netflix, as well as the new MORTAL KOMBAT film which will hit theaters on January 15, 2021.
