Remember Harry Potter? He's back, in stage-play form! In December of 2013 J.K. Rowling announced that she was in the process of developing a Harry Potter based play which would explore the "previously untold story of Harry's early years as an orphan and outcast." Little information was known about the play but now the Harry Potter author has revealed on Twitter that "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" will open in London next year.
I'm also very excited to confirm today that a new play called Harry Potter and the #CursedChild will be opening in London next year.

It will tell a new story, which is the result of a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and myself. #CursedChild

I don't want to say too much more, because I don't want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans. #CursedChild

However, I can say that it is not a prequel! #CursedChild

To answer one inevitable (and reasonable!) question – why isn't #CursedChild a new novel? – I am confident that when audiences see the play

they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story. #CursedChild

I've had countless offers to extend Harry's story over the years, but Jack, John and Sonia Friedman are a dream team! #CursedChild

It has been a huge pleasure to share with them (and soon, with you!) this untold part of Harry's story. #CursedChild

I've found the Harry Potter books and films to be quite enjoyable, but I still feel a little apprehensive about people dipping into that well too often. J.K. Rowling's involvement ensures that this new story will make sense and fit into the established wizarding world, but I've never felt the need to know more about Potter; those seven books and eight movies already gave us quite a lot.
This won't be the only upcoming production to return to the Harry Potter universe, J.K. Rowling has penned the screenplay for FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM which tells the story of a “magizoologist” named Newt Scamander as he studies and searches for various magical creatures in New York about seven decades before the arrival of Mr. Potter and his pals. FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM will be the first of a planned trilogy and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 18, 2016, with its sequels following suit in 2018 and 2020.
"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" will have its world premiere at London’s Palace Theater in the summer of 2016 and tickets will go on sale this fall. Despite my apprehension, I'll admit that I'm very curious.
