In April of this year Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer confirmed that he would score BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, not a big surprise considering his work on the last three Batman movies. He also had a history with Christopher Nolan outside Batman with INCEPTION (with James Newton Howard) and the Nolan-produced MAN OF STEEL; they reunite again this week with INTERSTELLAR. With BvS it sounds like Zimmer wanted to work on the film while keeping the legacy of his work with Noaln intact. So he had to compromise and in a new interview Zimmer explains what he came up with.
Here is the exchange between Comic Book Resources and Zimmer:
CBR: Next, you’re doing another superhero film, ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, featuring the Superman you’ve scored before for ‘Man of Steel’, and also a character that you’ve approached before in a different cinematic context, Batman. Are you doing a different take on Batman, or drawing from your established theme, or something else?
HZ: You know something? I have agonized over it. I agonized over it, so much so that finally, I went, I don’t want to betray what Chris [Nolan], James Newton Howard and I did. And so I asked Zack [Snyder] if it would be OK if I called a friend in. And I’m going to be working with Junkie XL, who really is a great friend. He just finished the Mad Max score. I said to him, “You take care of Batman. I’ll do the other guy.” And Zack loved that idea. It’s a way out.
So Zimmer will score BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, but he’s bringing in Junkie XL to work on Batman’s music. I'm down with that; I'd hate to hear a burned out Hans Zimmer tackle a new sound for Batman if he's not feeling it. What do you think about this pairing and do you wish Zimmer was taking on Batman’s sound too?
Here is Junkie XL’s bonus track “Bombers Over Ibiza”, from the deluxe edition of the The Dark Knight Rises soundtrack.
