This week was supposed to be a big week for HALLOWEEN fans because HALLOWEEN KILLS, the sequel to the 2018 follow-up to the 1978 original film, was set to release this week. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was pushed to October of next year which pushed the third planned entry, HALLOWEEN ENDS, to 2022. While some movies keep getting pushed back further, producer Jason Blum says we will get HALLOWEEN KILLS next October as planned, "no matter what."
Blum was doing an interview with "Forbes" and the subject of HALLOWEEN KILLS was brought up. It appears that, even if things aren't back to normal by October of next year, we will get to see HALLOWEEN KILLS on its new release date:
"No, if this is still going on next Halloween? No, we're not holding it. Halloween Kills is coming out next October come hell or high water, vaccine or no vaccine. It is coming out."
Blum didn't touch on the subject in regards to whether the film could go straight to streaming if things aren't back to normal by October of next year. I'm sure, like for many entities releasing films, it's an option that is on the table because these times are truly unprecedented and this being a viable option is now the new normal for the industry. When HALLOWEEN KILLS was announced to be delayed until next year, director David Gordon Green and franchise co-creator John Carpenter released an announcement letter to reveal the news:
"We write this heartbroken over the fact that the delay of our film is even a discussion, but if there's one thing that a career in the film industry has prepared us for, it is the unexpected. Over the past few weeks, our film family has looked at the forecast of theatrical exhibition with obvious concern…If we release it in October of this year as planned, we have to face the reality that the film would be consumed in a compromised theatrical experience. After weighing our options, we have chosen to push the film's theatrical release by one year."
Jamie Lee Curtis returns in HALLOWEEN KILLS as Laurie Strode and judging from the teaser trailer, it looks like it picks up right where the 2018 film left off. Also returning for the sequel is Judy Greer as Laurie's daughter Karen and Andi Matichak as Karen's daughter Allyson. Joining the fright is Anthony Michael Hall, taking on the role of Tommy Doyle from the original film, and Kyle Richards, reprising her role as Lindsey Wallace from the first film.
It's reassuring that we'll be getting the film no matter what next year but I hope things are back to normal enough to see this in a packed theater because it's likely to be a truly fun experience. Do YOU think HALLOWEEN KILLS will come out as planned? The film is expected to hit screens on October 15, 2021.
