Blarg! There's nothing like logging in to disappointing news. I mean, I've reserved myself to thinking that HELLBOY 3 was a pipe dream for quite some time now, but seeing that Guillermo del Toro has made an official statement that the film will never happen, still hurts my kitty-pettin', pancake loving heart real bad.
Earlier today, Guillermo del Toro took to his Twitter account and posted the following:
Then, after del Toro broke the hearts of his 602,000 followers and then some, Hellboy actor Ron Perlman tweeted the words, "Superhero seeks employment. Likes, pizza, cats, and the Marx bros."
Additionally, back in January, del Toro posted a poll on his Twitter account as a way of gauging whether or not fans were interested in there being a sequel to HELLBOY and HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY. With roughly 130,000 participating in the anonymous survey, the reply was a thunderous "Yes!" Shortly thereafter, del Toro said that he spoke with Perlman about getting the band back together for another hellish adventure. After their conversation, del Toro had this to say, "I spoke with Ron Perlman. He's in for the sit down. Will approach [character creator] Mignola next. Will keep you posted. Very moved by your love of pt I & II." Alas, even with fans being eager for another film, and Perlman seemingly being down to portray the Nazi-punching hellspawn once again, it's just not going to happen.
So yeah … I, ugh. Like I said earlier, I didn't have the highest of hopes that this project would come to fruition, but seeing del Toro give what I assume will be the final word on the matter is a blow to my little nerd heart. Still, there are two awesome HELLBOY movie to enjoy for the rest of our days, and if nothing else, I'm happy that del Toro was the one to bring that character to screen. Perhaps someone else will take a stab at the franchise down the road, but I have a feeling that it'll be a cold day in Hell before something like that happens.
Let us know what you all think about this development in the comments section below! Is there perhaps another aspect of the HELLBOY universe you'd like to see be adapted into a film format? Perhaps a B.P.R.D. spin-off film? Or maybe an Abe Sapien solo venture? What about Lobster Johnson or Frankenstein: Underground? I'm just saying, there's options.
Del Toro's next directorial effort will be the fantasy adventure film THE SHAPE OF WATER, which is expected to release some time in 2017.
