Ghostbusters to get theatrical re-release this summer; Blu-ray on Sept 16th

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

As rumors swirl that ZOMBIELAND director Ruben Fleischer may direct the long in development GHOSTBUSTERS 3, fans of the original films will be in for a treat. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the classic first film in the GHOSTBUSTERS series will get a theatrical re-release in theaters this summer. Now, this is not some little re-release like you sometimes see for classic films. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1984 horror comedy, GHOSTBUSTERS will be shown in over 700 theaters on August 29th.

The theatrical run, while short, will be the lead in to a celebration that will include other events to be announced and now collectible merchandise for sale. It will also serve as a precursor to the Blu-ray release of the 30th Anniversary Edition of GHOSTBUSTERS and a 25th Anniversary Edition of GHOSTBUSTERS II. This will mark the Blu-ray debut of GHOSTBUSTERS II which will come with new interviews with Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman along with deleted scenes from the sequel.

Rory Bruer, Sony President of Worldwide Distribution, had this to say about the 30th anniversary events.

“Ghostbusters is still one of our studio’s most beloved franchises. I was lucky enough to work on the release of the film on its first run, so it’s a real thrill for me to see that it’s still connecting with audiences everywhere. On the big screen or in home entertainment, this is a great movie to experience again and again.”

GHOSTBUSTERS is a landmark comedy and an iconic moment in any movie fan’s life. For those of us who were kids in the 80s, it represents the type of movie that we just don’t see anymore. As much as I would love to see the gang get back together for a third film, it just won’t be the same without Bill Murray or the late Harold Ramis. At least now we can enjoy and celebrate the original movies.

There is no listing or price for the GHOSTBUSTERS Anniversary set but we will let you know as soon as it is available.
