There was a press conference this past Sunday at Lucasfilm’s San Francisco headquarters involving some of the cast and crew of ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY. While the film wasn’t screened at that time, director Gareth Edwards did talk about one of the few who had a chance to see it; STAR WARS creator George Lucas. Lucas has seemed less than enthused with FORCE AWAKENS, given how much that film aimed to emulate the original trilogy, but it looks like he’s singing a different tune this time around.
Gareth Edwards on George Lucas‘ reaction to ROGUE ONE:
Two days ago, we got to show George the movie. I got to speak with him yesterday — I don’t want to put words into his mouth, but I can honestly say that I can die happy now. He really liked the movie, so it meant a lot. No offense to anyone here, but it was the most important review to me. You guys are important too, but he’s kind of God. I will take that conversation to my grave. It was a real privilege. His opinion means the world to me.
For all of his failures as a writer and director, I’ll forever respect George Lucas as a man with some great ideas and concepts. Him signing off on ROGUE ONE might not carry much weight with Star Wars fans, but I like the idea of Lucas not being salty about the sale of Lucasfilm and finally embracing what Disney has in store for it. Here’s hoping the public’s opinion of the film lines up with George Lucas‘!
ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY opens in theaters on December 16th.
