Following JURASSIC PARK, THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK, and JURASSIC PARK III, the franchise lay dorment for a number of years before it was resurrected with JURASSIC WORLD. The Colin Trevorrow film was a huge success, and much like the original, also spawned two sequels, JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM and the upcoming JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION.
While JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION has been billed as the third and final installment of the JURASSIC WORLD trilogy, franchise producer Frank Marshall told Collider that the film won't be bringing the entire series to a conclusion. Collider asked Marshall whether JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION was being envisioned as an endpoint for the series, to which Marshall responded, "No. It's the start of a new era. The dinosaurs are now on the mainland amongst us, and they will be for quite some time, I hope." While I doubt that anyone was really expecting the franchise to end with JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION (not while there's money to be made), it is interesting to know that Marshall expects the series to continue with the new world order the JURASSIC WORLD trilogy has established.
Following JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION, what types of stories would you like to see the franchise tackle?
JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION, the third installment of the JURASSIC WORLD trilogy, will find Owen (Chris Pratt), Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), and others dealing with the fallout of JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, which found dinosaurs now freely roaming the American wilderness and urban areas. The film will also feature the return of Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm, Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant, and Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Sattler. Colin Trevorrow discussed why the time was finally right to bring back the original JURASSIC PARK trio last year, and why they weren't included in the first JURASSIC WORLD film.
We’d have had to come up with a reason why Ellie, Malcolm and Grant all went to the theme park on the exact same day it broke down – again. The next film allows the legacy characters to be a part of the story in an organic way. Emily Carmichael and I call it ‘Jurassic Park VI’, because it is.
Although we caught a glimpse of Jeff Goldblum in JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, we haven't seen Sam Neill and Laura Dern since JURASSIC PARK III, nearly twenty years ago. "You start asking the most basic questions: who are these people now? What do they make of the new world they’re living in, and how do they feel about being part of its history?" Trevorrow teased. "Ultimately it will be in collaboration with the actors. They know and love these characters. We’ll do it together." JURASSIC WORLD 3 is set for a June 11, 2021 release, but as production was put on hold due to COVID-19, that date may very well change.
