It was just the other day that Joblo reported that David Yates' third FANTASTIC BEASTS movie finally had a firm filming start date, with cameras set to roll in Spring 2020. Multiple outlets have also confirmed that the film itself will be set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Although the third entry in the Harry Potter prequel series may take place in South America, fans will be happy to learn that FANTASTIC BEASTS 3 will feature a much loved locale and a much loved character, more extensively.
In a possible effort to course correct the series, FANTASTIC BEASTS 3 will spend more time at Hogwarts and with everyone's favorite Sherbet lemon loving wizard, Albus Dumbledore. One of the main reasons THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD failed, is that many felt the story was simply too confusing and introduced way too many new characters. FANTASTIC BEASTS is set within the same world as Harry Potter, but when you get right down to where the eye of newt meets the cauldron, Newt Scamander and company aren't Ron, Hermione, and Harry.
According to box office analyst Jeff Bock, where THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD excelled was when the setting took place in the eponymous school of witchcraft and wizardry:
“If you look at what worked with ‘Crimes of Grindelwald, it was when they went back to Hogwarts. There were audible gasps from the audience. People loved seeing Jude Law as Dumbledore. Hopefully J.K. and the writers realize just because the movie is set in Brazil doesn’t mean we can’t spend half the time at Hogwarts. There are things they could do to save the movie.”
While many agree that the best parts of THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD took place in Hogwarts and that Jude Law made for an amazing young Dumbledore, it remains to be seen whether or not more Hogwarts and more Dumbledore will help the franchise. People just don't seem to be responding as strongly to the prequel series as they did to the Harry Potter saga. The FANTASTIC BEASTS series is supposed to be composed of five films total but if this next installment fails to perform at the box office, the franchise could be more broken than Ron's snapped wand.
FANTASTIC BEASTS 3 starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, and Johnny Depp conjures its way into theaters November 12, 2021.
