Edge of Tomorrow is one of the best sci-fi/action films to come out in the last few years and a sequel has been the topic of discussion ever since the first film debuted in 2014. While the film wasn't a HUGE hit out of the gate, the film performed well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel, and the movie has only made gains in popularity after its theatrical run. Sequel plans have certainly been brewing and one of the film's stars, Emily Blunt, believes the sequel happening is only a matter of time and she teases some "cool" and "promising" things from the script.
Emily Blunt is currently promoting her new movie Wild Mountain Thyme and during a recent interview coming to us via "The Hollywood Reporter", Blunt admits that scheduling has been the main culprit keeping the sequel from happening but she says that the script they have is very solid:
"Yes, [the script] is really promising and really, really cool. I just don't know when everything's going to sort of align, you know what I mean? Between all of our schedules, it would just have to be the right time. But there is something in the works, for sure, that's a great idea. A great idea."
Directed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow follows a soldier played by Tom Cruise who ends up reliving the same day over and over again every time he dies battling an invasive alien race. The marketing for the film wasn't the strongest, which is why the film didn't perform as well as it could have when it came out during the summer of 2014 but word of mouth was strong enough to combat some of the confusion created by the marketing campaign. Critics loved the film, gracing it with a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it went on to gross $370 million worldwide. The main problem the film face from a financial standpoint was that it had a reported budget of $178 million that got in the way of some of its profitability. I think in the long run, the studio saw that a sequel could build on the goodwill of the original which is why they have been trying for years to get it made.
The downside to having huge stars like Cruise and Blunt is that they are in high demand, which makes scheduling the sequel a difficult task. Cruise is currently filming both Mission: Impossible 7 & 8 back-to-back and he has that whole movie in space to do with director Doug Liman, who is also expected to return to helm Edge of Tomorrow 2. Emily Blunt, meanwhile, has A Quiet Place Part II on deck for next year and also has The English and Not Fade Away on her to-do list as well. I really hope the stars align for this one because I think a sequel to this project would be really fun.
