Drew Goddard to write the Netflix/Marvel Daredevil series

On the heels of Netflix getting the exclusive television series from Marvel comes the news that the DAREDEVIL project is close to signing a writer. Drew Goddard, friend to Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams, is close to coming aboard as the scripter according to The Wrap. Goddard is known as the director of THE CABIN IN THE WOODS and also worked on scripts for WORLD WAR Z, CLOVERFIELD, and ROBOPOCALYPSE. His television work includes LOST, ALIAS, ANGEL, and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.

Goddard is a self professed DAREDEVIL fan and told the following to Collider:

“You’re talking to a guy who had quotes from Daredevil painted on his wall while growing up. Even when I was 18, I still had the blood red door with the, ‘I have shown him that a man without hope is a man without fear.’ That was what I loved and so it’s the sort of thing that if we can find the right project, I would love to do it.”

That sounds to me like a guy who is going to give the series his all. I hope that the budget given to these Netflix series is enough to make it look high quality. I want this series to be darker and grittier than the Ben Affleck film but also in line with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Goddard’s ties to Whedon likely means that he was selected with his resume in mind. Let’s just hope this doesn’t turn out poorly.

DAREDEVIL along with the Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist series are expected to premiere in 2014 on Netflix.
