For the most part, Disney's live-action adaptations of their animated classics have proven to be quite successful, with several grossing well over $1 billion worldwide, and there's only one thing you can do when a film makes that much money — sequels!
Per Variety, Disney is now developing a sequel to ALADDIN, which grossed $1.051 billion at the box-office last year, and have tasked John Gatins (POWER RANGERS) and Andrea Berloff (THE KITCHEN) with penning the script. The project is still in early development, but Disney has apparently spent the past six months figuring out which direction the sequel should go, and jumped at a pitch from Gatins and Berloff. Will Smith, Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott will likely be back, but Variety says that producers likely won't reach out to the cast until the script is ready. As far as ALADDIN director Guy Ritchie goes, it's not clear whether or not he'll be back as well. The original animated film spawned several straight-to-video sequels, but sources told Variety that the live-action sequel will be completely original and won't be based on those ideas.
Are you down for a sequel to ALADDIN or would you prefer that Disney leave the franchise alone?
This ALADDIN sequel isn't the only follow-up which Disney is developing, as they're also working on a spin-off movie for the Disney+ streaming service which will focus on Prince Anders, the scene-stealing suitor and potential husband for Jasmine who hailed from the kingdom of Skånland. Billy Magnussen (NO TIME TO DIE) will reprise the role, but like the sequel, the spin-off project is still in the very early stages.
