It's been 11 years since John McTiernan released BASIC, his last film since the long turmoil of a seven-year legal battle began, which ultimately ended in a one-year jail sentence, which he is currently serving. However, the action auteur of such films as DIE HARD, PREDATOR, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, and THE 13TH WARRIOR is not out of the game entirely. McTiernan is expected to be released from prison this spring and has already signed on to direct his first film literally out of the gate with RED SQUAD for Hannibal Classics.
From the press release:
"To “Red Squad” producer and Hannibal Chairman/CEO Richard Rionda Del Castro, having McTiernan direct this film represents the ideal pairing. 'We are thrilled John McTiernan will be directing ‘Red Squad.’ He is known for directing smart, exciting action films. And John is the type of director our film requires,' said Rionda Del Castro. 'His style will translate all the elements on screen, superbly.'"
The film is described as:
"…a story told in the spirit of a modern-day "Magnificent Seven." The film centers on a former DEA agent, who has always had a rogue streak, and his select team of mercenaries as they descend upon a Mexican border town in a daring attempt to neutralize a ruthless drug lord."
This is tremendous news for me personally, as I have always regarded McTiernan as my favorite director, even if he's had his misfires (ROLLERBALL and BASIC among them). I'll reserve my feelings on the case that cost us 11 years without a new film from him, but would encourage anyone to take a closer look at the details. Regardless, I'm just happy to see McTiernan get back behind the camera, rather than leave the industry altogether and RED SQUAD sounds like a great use of his skills. Hopefully, it pulls together a solid cast to boot and we can settle in for some of the kinetic energy and action mayhem of a John McTiernan film once again.
RED SQUAD begins filming this spring.
