Demons, Nazis & L.A. in the teaser for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels

The latest teaser trailer for the "spiritual descendant" to Showtime's Penny Dreadful series has arrived, complete with demons, Nazis, and 1938 Los Angeles. Penny Dreadful: City of Angels looks to be a completely different beast than its predecessor, but I'm absolutely down for what they're serving up. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

A big part of the appeal of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, at least at this point, is Natalie Dormer, who is playing a shape-shifting demon known as Magda. Dormer has previously described Magda as a "delicious, multi­dimensional thrill," an "agent of chaos" who can "sow the seeds of disorder." As far Magda's plans on Earth, the actress said, "she’s fundamentally a skeptic of humanity. She says in the first episode, ‘I give human beings a choice, but they choose time and time again to be seduced by the more baser, selfish roles.'"

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will debut on Showtime on April 26, 2020.
