Deadpool 2 writers on the cut post-credit scene which went a little too far

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

MINOR SPOILERS for DEADPOOL 2. A character like Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) can get away with saying or doing just about anything, but according to DEADPOOL 2 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick while they spoke with Uproxx, there is a limit. The reviews for the film been quite positive, with many praising DEADPOOL 2 as the rare sequel which improves upon its predecessor, and the post-credit scenes were also singled out as a highlight of the film. However, one of them didn't make it to the final cut for rather obvious reasons.

The cut sequence found Deadpool traveling back in time and strangling baby Adolf Hitler to death. Yikes. Sure, it's baby Hitler, but…still. Paul Wernick revealed that the sequence was shot, but Rhett Reese added that they realized it was a mistake as soon as they test-screened the bit for audiences.

We shot it and we put it in front of an audience. He’s got the crib and he’s standing in the German nursery and he’s leaning over the crib to do it and there was kind of this, “ohhhhh.” And we thought we don’t want to leave the crowd on an “ohhhhh.” So it ended up coming out. Our last moment was Deadpool saying “Maximum effort!” as he goes in to throttle the baby. It does make you squeamish.

Wernick said that "There’s even a draft of that scene where we back it up even more where he’s standing over baby Hitler and says, 'God, that is a toughie.' He finds a Sharpie and draws a mustache on the baby – a little baby mustache – and says 'Maximum effort!'" Reese added that "Now he looks just enough like him that he can get up the courage to do it." You can certainly understand why they cut that scene out, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to see it. Perhaps on the Deadpool 2: Special Baby Hitler Edition Blu-ray? Too soon.
