Looks like we could be seeing more superhero origins coming to television thanks to shows like ARROW, THE FLASH, and GOTHAM. Bleeding Cool is reporting that MAN OF STEEL screenwriter David Goyer is attached to a new series with the working title of KRYPTON. Based on the fact that Goyer has been involved with both Superman and Batman properties on the big screen as well as the recently premiered CONSTANTINE, I would say it is a safe bet to assume this is what the title suggests it is.
With SMALLVILLE already having shown us Superman’s development from teen to hero, KRYPTON could instead by a look back at the fully realized alien planet that took up almost the first act of Zack Snyder‘s MAN OF STEEL. There were rumors for a while that Russell Crowe would be interested in reprising his performance as Jor-el for a prequel film. I doubt, though, that Crowe would do a television series but you never know these days.
With DC and Warner Bros developing their superhero properties into distinct big screen and small screen universes, this series could feature Superman’s father and mother, even General Zod, or it could tell a lead-up story using original and supplemental characters with the end of the show’s run being the events of MAN OF STEEL. Depending on how you received MAN OF STEEL, this could be good news or the worst thing possible.
There is no confirmation that this series will even get the greenlight, but with GOTHAM doing well in it’s debut season, I would say this may be happening sooner rather than later.
