David Fincher’s comedy series Living On Video picked up by HBO

David Fincher's latest project looks to be a lock as Deadline is reporting that HBO has picked up his comedy series Living On Video. That's right, I said comedy series. While the cable network has yet to confirm the news that Living On Video is getting a full series order, all of the signs point to it happening.

It appears that the series stars Charlie Rowe, Sam Page, Jason Flemyng, Corbin Bernsen, Kerry Condon and Elizabeth Lail. Fincher directed the first two episodes of the series instead of making a standard pilot and HBO has ordered an additional 8-10 episodes to complete the first season. Here is the synopsis for the series which was written by Rich Wilkes (xXx) and Bob Stephenson based on an idea by Fincher.

Set in 1983 Los Angeles, Living On Video revolves around the players of the then-exploding music video industry — directors, record executives and crew members, many of them dabbling in drugs — through the eyes of a newcomer, Robby (Charlie Rowe). Robby is a wide-eyed guy who drops out of college and drives to Hollywood with dreams of directing a sci-fi epic and lands a job as a PA for a company making music videos.

Living On Video is one of two projects Fincher has set up at HBO, the other being an adaptation of British series Utopia which he is developing with GONE GIRL author Gillan Flynn. Fincher got his start in music videos before moving into feature filmmaking so it will be interesting to have him return to his roots. What is more intriguing to me is the prospect of David Fincher making a comedy. While there have been humorous elements in his films, I cannot envision anything other than a very dark comedy from him.

Living On Video has no premiere date, but I would expect it to debut by the end of 2015.
