What better time to confirm a new project than when your latest film is just a few days away from release. David Fincher’s anticipated GONE GIRL takes a back seat right now as Fincher has revealed that he intends to direct every first season episode of HBO upcoming series Utopia! His collaboration with GONE GIRL author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn seemed to spark up a creative relationship as the two will develop the remake of the UK series together. It has been said this will be Fincher’s focus for all of 2015, which makes sense considering he won’t be developing his 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA remake.
The original UK series “follows a small group of people who find themselves in possession of the manuscript sequel of a cult graphic novel called The Utopia Experiments which is rumoured to have predicted the worst disasters of the last century. This leads them to be targeted by an organisation known as The Network, which they must avoid to survive. Using the manuscript, they must uncover the meaning hidden in its pages before the disasters depicted become reality.”
Fincher talked toThe Guardian (via The Playlist) about the project:
“I like the world of it. I like the characters – I love Dennis’ [Kelly, creator of the UK show] honesty and affinity for the nerds. I mean, I’ve always been a bit of a junior conspiracy theorist cos I don’t have time to connect them all! But it’s nice to see that somebody has.”
It’s great to see directors like Fincher and Steven Soderbergh (who directed every episode of the fantastic show The Knick) take to TV to tell great stories and perhaps have more control over their work. Utopia sounds like something Fincher could handle masterfully and with HBO backing him, we might be looking at another landmark series for the channel.
The interview concluded with a note about the Steve Jobs biopic he walked away from saying it “was definitely a possibility,” and then added, “but it got sideways very fast.” Sadly that was one project I think we were all looking forward to. Alas, an entire season of Utopia on HBO will do suffice; we will keep you posted on any new developments.
