So now that Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR has hit theaters, what might his next project be? According to The Tracking Board, it could be an adaptation of the sci-fi novel READY PLAYER ONE. The site is reporting Warner Bros. has made an offer to Nolan to helm a big screen version of the Ernest Cline book from a script by THE AVENGERS and X2: X-MEN UNITED scribe Zak Penn.
READY PLAYER ONE has been described as "the adventure comedy of Mike Judge’s Idiocracy meets South Park’s Imaginationland with a dash of Willy Wonka except all of the cynicism has been replaced by sheer geeky love," and is apparently filled with 1980s pop culture references.
Book synopsis from Amazon:
In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.
Just because Warner Bros. wants Christopher Nolan to direct the film doesn't mean he's going to accept the job though, and while I am a huge Nolan fan, I'd almost rather see someone like Edgar Wright or Phil Lord and Chris Miller behind the camera for the adaptation. However, I'm certainly not going to bitch if Nolan does end up directing READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros.
