There have been rumors swirling about a stand-alone Han Solo flick ever since Lucasfilm announced their Anthology series. Not only do we now have confirmation (and a short snyopsis), but we also have the directors; Christopher Miller and Phil Lord.
You'll undoubtedly recognize those names from 21 JUMP STREET and THE LEGO MOVIE. The former of which they established their great comedic stylings in the live-action realm, and the latter their love for the classic childhood toys in a movie that had no business being as great as it did. It looks though Lucasfilm agrees, as they have now officially announced the two directors as the helmers of the Han Solo prequel.
Scripting the film will be Star Wars favorite Lawrence Kasdan (THE EMPIRE STRIKE BACK, THE FORCE AWAKENS) and his son, Jon Kasdan. The story will focus on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.
Christopher Miller and Phil Lord on directing the Han Solo Anthology film:
This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.
Writers Lawrence and Jon Kasdan speaking about the directors:
We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” said the Kasdans. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.
Producer Kathleen Kennedy on Miller and Lord:
It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.
There's no doubts that Miller and Lord can assemble a hell of a cast, and that they show a true admiration for the projects they take on. They haven't exactly been known for their action finesse, but everyone said the same about Joe and Anthony Russo before they took on CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Obviously the big nut to crack here is who they're going to cast as a young Han Solo. There's not many people who can fill the shoes of Harrison Ford. Even everyone's favorite to take up Indiana Jones mantle (Chris Pratt) couldn't make this deal, as it's too close to his GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY character. Is it too soon for casting announcements at this week's SDCC? We'll find out!
The Han Solo Anthology film will be released on May 25, 2018.
