Before camera’s finally started rolling on BOND 25 there was a ton of speculation around who would be and who wouldn’t be returning for the new outing – including Bond himself, Daniel Craig. Also in that “Will they won’t they” conversation was Christoph Waltz, all until he himself said he wasn’t coming back for more. But after some rumors started floating it seems the genie has been let out of the bottle, and now it’s been revealed that indeed Waltz will be back as the villainous Blofeld after squaring off against Bond in the last outing, SPECTRE.

The rumor mill started spinning again after a reporter for the Daily Mail, Baz Bamigboye, tweeted out a picture of Waltz’s Blofeld with a caption that said a visitor on set caught a glimpse of the actor, who then told the visitor, “You haven’t seen me.” This is not the first time it’s been rumored Waltz would be returning, and indeed The Playlist reported as much back in February, but still, nothing was confirmed. But now outlets like The Guardian and Variety are getting confirmations the reports are true, and that Blofeld is back to ruin Bond’s life.
Before this, the only confirmed news around the villain of the movie was for Rami Malek’s character, who is meant to be the major baddie. According to The Playlist, sources have revealed that Blofeld will perhaps be taking on a role akin to Hannibal Lecter in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, with Lea Seydoux’s character (also in SPECTRE) visiting Blofeld in prison, seeking his advice on how to possibly track down Malek’s character. Who knows if that is how it actually goes down after rewrites and Phoebe Waller-Bridge being brought in to add to the script.

While Blofeld lived at the end of the last movie, delays in getting the 25th outing going made people wonder if the character was coming back for more. Waltz said he wouldn't be as far back as 2017, saying, "No, I'm sorry. I'm really sad, but that's the tradition, that there is a new…name. Sorry. I would've liked to." Nothing about that seemed to change with the announcement that BOND 25 was a go, with other cast members being confirmed, like Malek, Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes, Lashana Lynch, Naomie Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Ben Whishaw and more.
But now that it seems he is coming back, now we can start to wonder how he will factor into the story. If the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS angle is true, then that means we may get a scene or two with him, but he will indeed be taking a back seat to Malek's character. But if this is to be the final outing with Craig as Bond, Waltz's Blofeld would perhaps need to wrap up his time too, so maybe a big prison break is involved. Given how much they hid Waltz's involvement I can't imagine juicier details are going to come to light soon, but stick around just in case!
Directed by Cary Fukunaga and written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, BOND 25 is set for April 8, 2020.
