Despite its troubled production and mixed reviews, Brad Pitt's WORLD WAR Z still managed to make a bundle at the box-office, meaning that a sequel was an inevitability. Paramount announced the sequel not too long after the release of the first and Juan Antonio Bayona (THE IMPOSSIBLE) was later attached to direct, although he jumped ship earlier this year due to other commitments leaving Paramount scrambling for a replacement. According to Variety, Brad Pitt may be looking at an old friend to tackle the WORLD WAR Z sequel.
The outlet reports that Brad Pitt, along with Paramount and Skydance, have been having conversations with David Fincher with the hope that he'll direct WORLD WAR Z 2. Fincher and Pitt met several weeks ago and while the talk was initially lukewarm, Variety's sources say that the negotiations have moved much further down the road and that no one else has been made the offer to direct. Should David Fincher come on-board the zombie sequel, of which I have some serious doubts, it would mark his fourth collaboration with Brad Pitt after SEVEN, FIGHT CLUB, and THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON. Stranger things have happened, but having Fincher involved with the WORLD WAR Z sequel would definitely give it a boost.
WORLD WAR Z 2 is set for a June 9, 2017 release.
